Welcome back!
It has been like forever since I uploaded a review and I apologize for that. Anyways, I am back now and today I will be reviewing a book titled an ember in the ashes. It is the first book in the book series of 4. It is a YA fantasy, inspired by the Ancient Rome. The story follows Laia of Serra, Elias Veturius and Helene Aquilla. Three teens bounded by pain and suffering, striving to do everything they believe is right in order to survive and escape their present.
Laia is trying to rescue her brother who has been captured by the empire. Elias is a mask (ie a soilder) in Serra but he does not like the life he is living, he wants to be free. Helene Aquilla is also a mask and she is Elias’ bestfriend. They have been together since childhood.
Laia meets Elias at the commandant house where she works as a slave and also as a spy. The commandant is ruthless and shows no mercy to her slaves.
The story is told from Laia and Elias’ point of view and both perspectives are told in the first person narratives. I like this because I could understand both characters and it was almost impossible to judge them.
This book is character driven, it keeps you glued to its pages and makes you eager to find out what is going to happen next. It is extremely fast pace and very captivating.
The character development was well done. I was invested in every single character through out the book.
There is a supernatural theme that was not really explored in book one but regardless, the story is still super amazing. If you enjoyed reading children of blood and bone by Tomi Adeyemi, then you should pick this up.
I loved it and gave it a 5 out of 5 stars and I 100 percent recommend it. Just a side note, THIS BOOK IS BRUTAL!
Okay! That’s all I have got for book one. If you have read it, let me know what you think and I will be back with the review for book two soon.
