The world was silent when we died.

Half of a yellow sun is a historical fiction about the Biafra, the breakaway state in the eastern Nigeria that only survived for three years.

In this book, Adichie focuses on the Nigerian - Biafran civil war and the worlds reaction to this war. This period was marked by extreme starvation, violence and discrimination. This story is told from the perspective of five fictional characters. She takes us into the ordinary lives of these characters and we watch as their lives unfolds before, during and after the war.

Adichie took her time in developing her characters. Half of a yellow sun is a journey, starting from the period of peace and to some people, plenty after the Nigerian independence in 1960 and then it progresses to the war which took place between 1967 -1670.

This book is divided into four parts. The first and third part takes place in the early sixties while the second and fourth part takes place in the late sixties. I believe the reason for this is to draw comparison between the lives of these characters before and during the civil war.

Finally, every Nigerian, especially the Igbos should read this book. It is a great reminder of what our people went through to fight for freedom.
