Purple hibiscus is a literary fiction novel set in post colonial Nigeria, a country that is faced with political difficulties, economic instabilities and corruption.

The story is about a 15 year old girl named Kambili and her family. Kambili and her brother grew up in a wealthy home, they had everything they ever wanted, everything in terms of food, clothing, good education etc but something was missing, these sibling never knew the world outside their home until they went to live with their cousins in NSUKKA.

Kambili’s father is a very religious man and he imposes his religious beliefs on them.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it felt close to home because I could relate to every single detail, the Igbo culture, the extreme religious beliefs, the domestic violence and the struggle to find ones voice.

The language is straight forward and easy to understand. The story is told from the perspective of a 15 year old and it is really amazing because we get to be in her head the whole time.

The story exposes vulnerability of all the characters, making it difficult to randomly judge a character. It is also an educative book, I got to learn somethings I never really knew as a Nigerian.

In conclusion, Chimamanda is a brilliant writer and she tries to connect with her readers in the best way possible. I really enjoyed this book and I definitely recommend it.
