Queenie - Candice Carty-williams
Queenie is a psychological fiction that focuses on the life of a 25 year old black woman living in London and the poor decisions she makes. These decisions were mainly caused by low self esteem and the desire to feel loved and accepted.
While reading this book, the first few chapters gave me this ‘Nah’ vibe because I felt the author was trying to justify the bad decisions Queenie made rather than focusing on ways she can become a better person but as I dived deeper, I began to sympathize with Queenie, I could not believe I actually judged her without taking out time to look for the why behind her reasons.
Queenie is a black girl that does not date black men because of the relationship her mother had with a black man. She feels black men do not like her. She uses her experience with one black man to judge all black men. Personally, I feel this is not a good enough reason because the white men she felt would treat her better ends up treating her like trash. They only see her as a sex object not someone that can be loved. I wish the author had given us more details on Queenie’s relationships with black men.
This book also touches mental health which is really amazing. Queenie is able to realize that she has a problem and seek solution despite her grandmother's disapproval.
Some people say this book is similar to Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie but honestly, I do not think it is. Irrespective the fact that Ifemelu in Americanah and Queenie are both black women living in countries where people practice racism. Ifemelu is quite stubborn and she does not feel the need to do anything to be accepted or loved. Queenie on the other hand battled with her mental health which was also as a result of an abusive childhood.
Finally, while this book was a good read, I would rate it a 7 out of 10 because there are little details in the book I wished Candice Carty-williams emphasized on. If you have read this book, let me know what you think and if you have not read it, let me know if it is something you would love to read although I advice you read it.
