Girl, Woman, Other is a literally fiction that follows the stories of twelve different women living in London over the cause of several decades. Each chapter explores the lives of three women that are connected to each other in some way. Bernadine Evaristo dwells on their thoughts and opinions to life. The only thing all twelve women has in common is the fact in the last chapter called the after party, they are all present at a play directed by one of the characters but not necessarily knowing each other.
It took a while for me to get into this book because the writing style and structure is different from what I am used to. I have not read any other book written by the author so I cannot say if this is her style of writing or if it is peculiar to this book.
Secondly, it was quite difficult to keep up because a lot of names were mentioned and sometimes I had to go back so I could understand the connections between some of the characters. This back and forth journey was a little bit frustrating but I guess it was worth it because I got to understand each character and I was able to see the world through their eyes. It took me about a week and two days to conclude this book because of the back and forth reading and also the occasional pause to process what I was reading.
Thirdly, I loved how real the characters were, each of them were flawed and struggled to be a better version of themselves. I also loved the fact that these characters had to deal with feminism, sexism and racism. It reveals what they had to go through in order to be accepted.
In conclusion, while the writing style was new to me, I actually loved it. It is unique and a bit poetic. I gave this book four stars because of the extra effort I had to put in to understand the connections between some of the characters.
