Transcendent kingdom is a literary fiction set in contemporary times. It is the story of a female character named Gifty who is getting her PHD in neuroscience. She is trying to understand addiction, get as much knowledge as she can from her experiments and apply it to humans. Maybe she might get a logical answer to her brothers addiction and her mothers depression.

This book focuses on addiction, faith, grief, science, race and depression. It also touches the conflict and unsettled marriage between science and religion. Gifty was brought up in a religious home but after the death of her brother, she felt religion could no longer provide an answer so she deviated to science but does not completely abandon her faith.

One thing I liked about this book is the honesty, the main character asks questions any human that has been through what she went through would ask.

The story is written in the first person narrative which is very different from the authors previous book titled Homegoing. If you have read Homegoing then I would advise you not to expect something similar to that in this book. Homegoing and Transcendent Kingdom are two very different books and I suggest you to treat them as such.

This isn’t a book I would recommend to just anyone, if you are just getting into reading, then I would not recommend this book, I suggest you read homegoing first because this book is slow and requires patience and if you are not a fan of reading, you might get bored. This does not change the fact that it is an amazing book.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed this book and I gave it a four out of five stars. If you are into literally fiction, then you should definitely read it.
