Children of blood and bone is a young adult fiction set in a mythical kingdom of Orisha where magic has disappeared and the maji (i.e. those who do not have magic anymore) are treated as less of a human being.

Zelie, the lead character in this book happens to be a maji who watched her mother die during the raid ordered by the king. Years later, Zelie goes to trade in Lagos with her brother Tzain and she meets the princess of Orisha Amari who is running away from the palace after watching her father kill her bestfriend Binta whose magic was awakened when she touched the scroll. Zelie helps Amari escape and together, the three of them begin their journey to bring magic back.

This book is told from multiple perspective which personally I like because I get to be in everyone’s head and see things through their eyes.

The world building is really good, like REALLY GOOD!. I had a clear vision of how the fantasy world looked like and also how the story was unfolding.

Character wise, I like the lead characters (i.e. Zelie, Amari and Tzain). I tried my best to like the prince of Orisha Inan, but his character is really frustrating. Several times i wanted to shake him and ask him what the hell is wrong with him.

The authors representation is also very beautiful. There is a part in the book where she wrote "I try not to think of her, but when I do, I think of rice, when mama was around, the hut always smelled of jollof rice." As a Nigerian, this is something I can relate to, Jollof rice is literally our food.

Tomi Adeyemi in one of her interviews says she draws her inspiration from police brutality and I feel this was well represented in the book.

King Saran and his army represents the police, while the maji and others with magic represent black Americans and black people in general.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story. I love the whole magic theme and even the romance was cool. I have read the second book and I can’t wait to share my thought with you all. I gave this book five out of five stars on good reads for all the reasons stated above and more. It is an AMAZING book and you should definitely read it.
