Little fires everywhere is about two families from different socioeconomic backgrounds who become a part of each others lives leading to the craziness that comes with the story. It is set in 1997 and takes place in Shaker heights Ohio.
This book is centered around two mothers, Mia and Elena and their children. Mia is a single mother raising her daughter. They tend to move around a lot. This makes it almost impossible for them to build relationships with people. She is also an artist.
Elena on the other hand is an organized house wife, living in a perfect city and to her, she is this good mother that wants to help everyone. She is married with four children.
Mia rents an apartment from the Richardson (i.e. Elena’s family) which eventually leads to her involvement in their lives.
I love how the author introduced the story. It starts up with this little fires around the Richardson house and then she takes us back to the beginning and brings us back to the fires which eventually ends the book. The characters literally experienced the title. Reading it, I found this really cool.
There is something about this book that keeps you engaged. I read it in three days. I was really invested because I wanted to understand all that was happening but the end left me speechless, I was like WTF!
A lot of things are happening and at the same time, nothing is really happening. I will stop here so I don’t spoil the book.
The mystery around this book lies in Mia’s character.
The writing style is really cool, it is written in a type of third person narrative called omniscient narrative. Every character’s voice is heard, no character is told from the perspective of another, It is like playing God. I also like how Celeste Ng effortlessly switched from one characters point of view to the other.
I gave it four out of five stars on goodreads because I had this really high expectation for it but the end just left me hanging. I wanted more!
It is a good read and would I recommend it? YES.
Finally, it has been adapted into a TV series which is available on Hulu. From someone who has read the book and seen the trailer, I’m quite positive that it is going to be an interesting show. I plan to watch it and you also should.
